Add Country Code Prefix to Phone Numbers in Contacts?

I frequently travel overseas but I'm unsure if it's necessary to add the country code prefix to each of my Contacts. Also, do I need to add a "+" before the country code prefix? Dial Assist is enabled on my iPhone.

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities pt1989,

The country prefix is typically required anytime you're dialing a number outside of the region you're dialing from.

You're not required to enter symbols in the phone number field.
