Back to SD problems with Ventura?

Apple had previously fixed its software problem getting the SD card reader to perform correctly on the 2021 MBP. Now with Ventura, it seems to have taken a major step backward. Anyone else experiencing this?

Hello Cheshire Dave,

These are steps to resolve some of the issues you might encounter taken from Use the SD and SDXC card slot on your Mac - Apple Support:

If your card doesn’t mount
If you insert your card and it doesn’t mount, remove the card and insert it again. Sometimes the SD card won’t mount properly if you insert the card too slowly or too quickly.
If the card still won't mount, you might need to reformat your SD card.

If 'cannot be modified' appears
If the message 'cannot be modified' appears when trying to use the card, the SD card might be locked.
To unlock the card, eject the card, then remove the card from the computer. Adjust the lock slider tab on the card to unlock the card, then reinsert the card into the slot. See the manufacturer’s instructions for the location of the slider tab.

If you wanted to provide additional details of what you are experiencing, others here may be able to offer suggestions.

Have a good day.

Greetings Cheshire Dave,

To help isolate the issue, see if the behavior is system-wide by testing with a different macOS user account. See those steps here:

Add a user or group on Mac - Apple Support

Add a user
1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Users & Groups  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
2. Click the Add Account button below the list of users on the right (you may be asked to enter your password.)
3. Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose a type of user.
4. For more information about the options for each type of user, click the Help button in the lower-left corner of the dialog.
5. Enter a full name for the new user. An account name is generated automatically. To use a different account name, enter it now—you can’t change it later.
6. Enter a password for the user, then enter it again to verify. Enter a password hint to help the user remember their password.
7. Click Create User.

If the issue is system-wide, then reach out to Apple Support directly, as they'll be best equipped to help investigate the behavior. You can use the following link to reach out: Contact - Official Apple Support

Kind regards.

The old software problems reading from the 2021 MacBook Pro SD slot are well documented, so I don't need to rehash those here. Itt was finally a system software update that fixed those.

With Ventura, I'm seeing a return to extremely slow accessing the data on the SD card using the onboard slot. It spends a huge amount of time "preparing to transfer" when copying from the card. It eventually does, but it's brutally slow.

Furthermore, I'm seeing problems trying to empty the trash after deleting from the card. It empties partially and then gives me an error saying the card is in use (it's not). It takes several attempts with ejecting and reinserting the card for me to complete emptying the trash.

Restarting the machine has not helped.

Hopefully that's enough detail too move this conversation forward.

Thanks,

Cheshire

Yes, I did that too. The rep knew nothing of the issue and had no solutions, so I'm awaiting a call tomorrow from senior tech staff. In the meantime, I also checked the issue using a card via a third-party reader, and the problem is exactly the same. This is different from the 2021 problem, where it was limited to the software dealing with the onboard reader — now the problem exists regardless of how the card is being accessed, which makes it a bigger issue.

Looking around the web, other people are reporting the exact same thing and attributing it to Ventura. At the moment the only solution is to downgrade to Monterey. This problem is deadly for any photographer using SD cards.
