Message: Cannot send audio messages at this time

When trying to send an audio message in iMessage by pressing the Audio button I get the aforementioned message instead of the microphone icon.

This seems to be a recurring problem to many in the community and I tried all posted suggestions.

In short:

  • Latest software updates installed
  • Connected to a 5GHz wireless network
  • Tried resetting iMessage
  • Tried rebooting the iPhone (12 Max)

all to no avail.

Any pointers, suggestions?

Hey there, and welcome to Apple Support Communities ad23,

We can certainly understand your concern and can help provide some insight.

Let's check to ensure you don't have sound recognition enabled. The sound recognition feature stops you from recording or sending voice messages. Therefore, you need to turn it off in order to send voice messages.

Go to Settings  > Accessibility > Sound Recognition, then turn off Sound Recognition.

These steps will help ensure your device is working with ease and can fix common issues like the ones you’re experiencing.

Kindest regards!
