How are the Drives physically connected to the computer ? - details please.

How are the Drives Formatted ? ie NTFS for MS Windows, HFS Journaled, APFS, exFat, Fat

Is there any Third Party Software that may have been Bundled on the Drive when New that was installed on the computer ?

The previous suggestion is somewhat misguided.

Time Machine Backup, starting in macOS 10.15 does not contain a Full, Complete and Functional Working Copy of the Operating System

TM Backup only backups the User Account ( Home Folder ) and all the contents is that same Folder on this computer.

Both Drives are connected via USBC ports.

Both drives are formatted MAC OS extended Journaled.

No 3P software as far as i know.

I don’t have a TM backup in any of the drives.

One drive has all my data which i am trying to copy/ clone on a backup empty drive.

I have tried using disk utility, disk utility on recovery mode, CC Cloner, Ease Us and Tera Copy. In all cases, both drives dismount after a few mins.

The User wrote " But want to backup my external drive A with all my files into backup empty external drive B. Both are WD drives 4 TB and 5 TB "

To which a reasonable reply was supplied. Plus links to a similar question elsewhere

If the user wishes to move sideways on the Original Question, that is fine.

But suggest opening a New Question specific to the newly declared Real Issue

I am now also having the same issue.

Ventura 13.0.1

2019 Intel iMac.

2021 M1 Macbook Pro 14"

Samsung 4TB HDD.

WD 8TB HDD.

I usually manually back up my data to my hard disk once a month with Chronosync and put it in storage.

But since making the jump to Ventura in December, my backup strategy no longer works.

Connecting any HDD via USB causes Ventura to almost completely freeze up until I power down the device, at which point all interface interactions are registered..

No native applications will launch: (i.e. if I click on Calendar, Console, Safari, Terminal or Mail while the USB drive is connected nothing happens until I disconnect the drive, at which point the system springs back to life and all the applications open up simultaneously).

Strangely enough, Chrome and other 3rd party apps, such as Word and Filemaker Pro are seemingly unaffected. Only the preinstalled applications are affected.

Drive will or will not then randomly disconnect with "not ejected properly" error. USB access light on drive boxes flash as if constantly accessing the drive... Drive will not spin down or sleep.

I have tried two external USB enclosures, in case my main one was bad.

I have tried multiple drives. All drives are formatted to MacOS Extended Journalled.

I have tried direct USB connection and via a hub.

All the same.

Plugging the drive into any non Ventura machine revives the devices. But error reappears on connection to Ventura.
