Macbook pro slow to connect to wifi after wakeup when disconnected from wired connection

Hi,

I have two network connections set up on my mbp, to connect in this order:

1) PPPoE connection that I use when using a wired connection via USB-C adapter.

2) Wifi connection

When the wired connection is unplugged and I wake up the laptop, it takes around 30 seconds to connect to wifi, with an error dialog saying "Your connection failed because the communication device is unavailable."

Is there a way for MacOS to more gracefully fall back on the Wifi connection when unplugged from the wired connection?

Running MacOS 13.0.1 Ventura

Thanks!

MacBook Pro 14″, macOS 13.0

The issue is not whether the mac can connect to wifi. The mac actually shows as connected to the wifi as soon as it wakes up, but there's something about the PPPoE connection that seems to be keeping it from switching to that wifi connection for 30 seconds or so. For example, on Chrome it can't resolve DNS names until this time has passed.

Hello jtoolz,

30 seconds for the signal to actually connect sounds like the time it takes to finish waking up, network validation, or network congestion. It can also be slow connections in the walls, older cables on the router or modem, etc., but the fact the Mac actually connects after a short time from waking up shows it's working properly.

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities jtoolz,

Try making sure that your Wi-Fi network is connected, before disconnecting Ethernet or the USB-C adaptor.

1: On your Mac, click the Wi-Fi icon  in the menu bar, then choose the network you want to join.
2: If you don’t see the network you want to join, click Other Networks to display nearby networks.
If requested, enter the password for the network, then click Join.

Connect your Mac to the internet using Wi-Fi

We hope this helps!
