i can't unpair my watch from my old phone

I got a new phone. Didn't realize I had to unpair my watch from the old phone to be able to pair with my new phone. My old phone is no longer able to let me unpair. Says my Apple ID can't connect. I imagine its because my old phone isn't active. On my icloud account on the computer, I don't see my iwatch.
