My Macbook Pro is ridiculously slow. I use CleanMyMac and that says there's heavy memory usage constantly. I do not run more than one application at a time if I can help it, I've cleaned all caches, and it's still slow. I cannot think what else to do.

Uninstall all third party apps that are Cleaners/Optimizers/Anti-Virus/VPN
all known to cause issue in the macOS
your " CleanMyMac" is one of the worst. Excellent marketing campaign, strong wallet vac— but not advised.
After you run the uninstaller—
You get a good look at your System config. and reveal conflicts or issues, you can download/run this trusted utility https://etrecheck.com

According to the report, you've only got 4 GB of RAM and an 5400 RPM HDD on your 2012 MacBook Pro. Both of these are severely limiting your computer's performance. Even (especially) Chrome using 630 MB of RAM can really slow things down.
