music pauses near end of song

Music occasionally pauses playing a few seconds before a song ends. This happens once out of 20 or more songs. Here's what I observe:

1) I start music playing the songs in a playlist. The songs are all on my internal disk drive, as AIFF, MP3, etc.

2) The playlist plays normally for a while. Meaning each song plays thru to the end of the song and then the next song starts.

3) once in a while the song pauses for a few seconds. This occurs within a few seconds of the end of the song.

4) After the pause the song starts up again and finishes and Music continues playing the rest of the playlist, normally.

If I replay the song, it will play thru without a problem. The pause is, as far as I can tell, totally random. I can go for hours without a pause and it does not seem to be related to any particular songs or formats (it occurs with AIF, MP3, etc.).

I am running Monterrey 12.6.1. on a mac mini M1

This problem does not occur with my old macbook pro (intel).

Music is sending output to the headphone jack, which is connected thru a cable to speakers and to a airport express version 7.8.1 which is on the wireless network.

If the pause happens, it is always at the end of a song, never at other times, so I don't think this is a buffering problem.

Any ideas?

I should also say that no other computer/wireless intensive processes are going on. The mac is not sleeping and there are windows open, but I'm not downloading anything or running programs. It happens when I've left the room where the computer is and doing something else in the house, just listening to the music over the stereo (which is being driven thru the airport express).

Several times I have checked Activity monitor after this has occurred and cpu, network and disk usage are all very low.

My cellphone is, of course, connected to the wireless network but I am not getting calls or using the cellphone when this happens.

sorry to be so detailed, but I want to be as clear as I can about the conditions under which this is happening.

oh yeah, the light on the airport express is green and it's firmware is updated.

I've also looked for reports of this problem on the web and can't find it. Am I the only one having the problem?????
