Power Mac G5 not booting stuck on apple logo

Hi everyone,

I recently got my hands on a Power Mac G5 7.3, the computer worked normally for a day or two when suddenly while browsing in 'About this Mac' it froze, nothing responded. I had to shut it down from the power button but since then the computer doesn't boot anymore, it hangs on the gray screen with the apple logo with no 'spinning wheel', I only managed once to get it to boot by changing the system date but it only worked for a few seconds, it froze again. Here's what I've already tried to do:

-Changing the PRAM battery

-Resetting the PMU

-Reset nvram, set defaults, reset-all, in Open Firmware

-Starting from the Install DVD with and without the HDD connected

-Apple Hardware Test: everything passed

-Reseat the Video Card

-Put the RAM into different slots

-Boot in Verbose, it stops at 'DART enabled'

The result is always the same, the only thing I can do is enter the Open Firmware

Yes, the U3 chip under the RAM slots was the biggest cause of failure.

Older meanings...


Can you count the beeps or flashes?


1 beep = no RAM installed

2 beeps = incompatible RAM types

3 beeps = no good banks

4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)

5 beeps = processor is not usable


In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.


Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.

LED 1—CPU A: red—contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider 

LED 2—Overtemp: red—contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider 

LED 3—Power On: red—the main power is on 

LED 4—Trickle: yellow—Power Mac G5 is plugged into the wall correctly 

LED 5—Open Firmware good: green—no problem 

LED 6—CPU B: red—contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider 

LED 7—Checkstop: red—contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider

Yours by chance, wasn't a liquid-cooled model; usually but not limited to quad-core PPC G5?
