If your MacBook is locked you cannot check it, you must first unlock it. So if you have locked your MacBook remotely you first need to unlock it, follow the instructions to do that

The police returned it to me because I reported it stolen when my car was broken into.. a house well known to authorities last week was searched and many stolen items were recovered,my MacBook because I gave the serial number for cpic to have in their database... It's obviously been bypassed and not my device anymore as activation lock would argue....
Ah, the device is activation locked to another Apple ID now? That's sad... do you have other apple devices, can you check if the MacBook is still on your Apple ID when going to your name>click the MacBook in the list, there you can also find the serial number
If you really cannot unlock it, and you have valid proof of purchase documentation, I should first ask law enforcement for a report that you can show them, and after that start an activation lock support request at apple
