apple music high perfomance graphics

Why is the Apple Music app using high performance graphics on my intel 2019 MacBook Pro ?(Mac OS 13.1).

Anybody else notices this or is this just normal behaviour?

Hello Nanjag,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities.

We understand your concern and would like to provide you with a few steps that may be able to help resolve the issue that you're having when using the Apple Music app:

  1. Restart your Mac. This may seem like a simple steps to take but can refresh your Mac and the software.

On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Restart.

2. Start up your Mac in safe mode. Completing this step can help you identify whether issues you’re experiencing are caused by software that loads as your Mac starts up. Your screen may flash and load slower. This is expected behavior for this mode:

3. Verify if the issue occurs in a new user account. This will allow you to determine if the behavior is specific to your account or if it is a system wide issue: Add a user or group on Mac

If you continue to experience the same behavior, we suggest that you reach out to Apple Support directly concerning this issue. You can follow the link to connect with them: Get Support

All the best!

Hello Nanjag,

We're glad you had the opportunity to isolate the issue further. Since the issue only occurs when signing out of the GPU, you'll want to continue with contacting Apple. This will allow them the opportunity to investigate this issue further. You can find their contact details via the link previously provided and the included below.

Hello Nanjag,

I also have the same issue. My macbook pro is also 2019 model with the same Mac OS.

I've been researching this problem for two months but still had no luck resolving it. What I have observed so far is:

Apple Music uses discrete GPU only when you access the Apple Music main page ("Listen Now"). If you choose Recently Added page, force quit apple music and then open it again, Apple Music won't use discrete GPU, only if you choose the "Listen Now" section again.

This is obviously a bug, because I can't believe Apple Music uses so much graphics memory, that it requires discrete GPU, causing my MacBook Pro to produce much more heat and less battery life.

My workaround right now is to download gSwitch and force MacBook to use only integrated GPU. Hope Apple will fix it as soon as possible, although their support for Intel Macs is decreasing by numbers.

Please let me know if you find any solution to this bug!

Hello Nanjag,

In my attempt to better understand why my MBP 16" (2019) is draining my battery so fast I kept the Activity Monitor ("Energy" tab) open whilst doing normal day-to-day tasks (surfing using Safari, mail, music TV, ....), keeping a close eye on the estimates of remaining charge and time ... the estimate was that I could app. keep the laptop up and running for 5.5 hours (not the 11 hours they advertised!)

All of a sudden, whilst listening to a playlist I noticed that the Graphics Card being used switched from Integrated to the High Performance card (AMD Radeon Pro 5500M w. 8GB) and that battery draining spiked.

As nothing else was open at that moment (apart from Safari) I decided to see what would happen when I would shut down Apple Music. Guess what: the "Graphics Card" information (Activity Monitor) immediately switched back from "High Performance" to "Integrated"!

So yes, I can confirm this is happening on my laptop as well (running latest Ventura release) and I see no reason why you would need the high performance external GPU for playing music ... feels like a bug to me.
