Stopping the overlay controls from disappearing in streamed video in Safari

Is it possible to keep the video overlay controls visible when watching streamed video in Safari, instead of the overlay controls disappearing after a few seconds? I am using some streaming videos to learn a language and I need to repeat brief segments from the video quickly. You can do this by leaving the cursor over the required timeline point on the overlay and just clicking the mouse. But this doesn't work if the segment is more than a few seconds long and the overlay controls have disappeared. If that happens, you have to jiggle the mouse to get the overlay back, then click on the point you want - but that has the effect of stopping the stream, so you have to then start the stream again and re-position the cursor.

I hope this request is clear.
