Ventura 13.1 Firewall issue

Good morning, fellow Mac'ers:

After updating my iMac to Ventura, 13.1 I have noticed some issues when accessing the firewall under networking as follows:

  1. The firewall prompts for my password after accessing, even without making any changes.
  2. I have an application called ViewtronVMS that was working fine until I updated to 13.1. The applications processes are listed as being allowed for connection under the firewall options. The application will not start unless I manually start the process when I do I get the prompt to allow and the message this will be enabled in the firewall and can be changed later.

I spoke to the developer and he indicated that this is an issue with the firewall implementation, under 13.1.

Has anyone else experienced this issue and if so, do you have any suggestions?

Much gratitude in advance for any and all help!

Correction. The developer did not test the new OS and didn't prepare for the new OS release. It's a problem the developer now has to resolve. It is their responsibility to be ready for new OS releases. Developers have early access to pre-release betas specifically for this reason.

You now have two options.

  1. Backup your data and revert to Monterey
  2. Wait for the vendor to fix the problems so things work on Ventura
  3. Change vendors to an alternative

In IT managed work environments, the IT staff will test a new OS with all software, identify issues like this and not break things by deploying a new OS.

It is up to the developers to sign their software properly and follow the Apple API's so things like the Application Firewall work properly. Whenever you upgrade macOS you need to check all your software to ensure it will be compatible. ViewtronVMS appears to be CCTV software. You might need to pursue an alternative firewall solution or wait for the developer to fix the issue in macOS 13.1. For example buying LittleSnitch and using that instead of the built-in Application Firewall.

James, thank you for your response.Reverting to Monterey is not an option for security issues. I'm well aware of the testing required to deploy new OSs and application baselines in an operational environment. That said, one vendor pointing the finger at another vendor is not uncommon. In your previous post, you suggested that I use a different firewall. I took your suggestion and turned off Ventura's firewall and the problem still existed. I surmised that installing another firewall would not fix the problem. This would seem to indicate that the problem is not in the firewall update but with some other update or combinations of updates in Ventura 13.1. I was just hoping that someone in the community had experienced similar issues and might've had a solution.

My plan moving forward is to go back to the vendor and asked to speak to the developer team directly.

In closing, I will keep this post updated as soon as I have a firing solution.

Best Regards - Mark K.
