If you purchased them directly from Apple you should be able to return them. See: Returns & Refunds - Shopping Help - Apple

Can’t return replacement airpods after finding the ones that were lost. You can not return replacement airpods after you find the ones that you lost. It does not matter if you have not opened the replacements. In my case, I haven’t even received the airpod replacement. my roommate came across them and returned them to me so I no longer needed the replacement. Horrible support service.
