Can't remove icon from dock

Well, I can do it by Control-clicking on the icon then choosing Options-->Remove from Dock. But when I try to do it the old-fashioned way by just dragging the icon off the dock, I can't drag the icon. Instead, everything disappears from the desktop and the words "No Available Windows" appear. I have also discovered that I can half-press the trackpad and the Options drop-down appears. So:

  1. What's going on? Is dragging the icon off the dock no longer an option? Does the trackpad really have a hard press and a soft press, giving two different actions?
  2. Where am I supposed to learn about this? I've searched and searched the web generally and Apple's User Guide and Apple documentation but to no avail; nowhere can I find anything about this behavior concerning the trackpad or the dock icons.

I'm switching from a very old MacBook, and so all of the above is new to me.

THANK YOU, but I still can’t remove the icon. When I press more lightly, I get the pop-up window that I would normally get from right-clicking. I guess I’m still clicking wrong somehow? Apparently there are three levels of pressure now? Who knew I’d have to take a class on how to use the trackpad when I upgraded my hardware! Again, THANK YOU so much for responding.
