Ensure the iPhone is positioned correctly. Some wireless chargers can be fussy about positioning.

Force restart the iPhone, and try again: Force restart iPhone - Apple Support

Confirm the charger is plugged in, getting power, and that there is no visible damage to the charger or the cabling.

Try a different iPhone with this charger, and try this this iPhone on a different charger. See where the problem moves.

If it still doesn’t work, a DFU reset might clear it: If you can't update or restore your iPhone or iPod touch - Apple Support

Following that, you’re probably headed for a hardware repair.

I did the restart but will have to wait to try the wireless charger as I charged the iPhone using a cable. It is not a hardware problem as the chart showing battery history for the last 24 hours shows that the power was connected overnight yet the charge dropped from 96% to 65% while connected wirelessly. (It is highlighted in green and the charging bolt symbol is there.)
