Blocking texts

These days the scammers have switched from calls to text messages. Why is there no easy way to block these numbers? The only thing I can find is the ability to mute notices, but the text will still be there.

If you are just muting the sender, then you are not blocking them and they will not appear under Blocked Contacts. Check this link for information on how to block and filter text messages. It’s a bit of work but worth it in the long run.
