Apple Watch Series 3 stuck in buffering spinning wheel mode

My Apple Watch is stuck in the buffering spinning wheel mode. It has been sitting on the charger so it is fully charged. I have tried holding the side button down with the crown at the same time to force quit and nothing happens. It remains in the buffering spinning wheel mode. It has remained like this for a couple of days and nothing has changed. How do I get it out of its death spiral? Any suggestions? Thank you!
