Unsolicited Virus Infection Warning McAfee

I searched for "Cerecfired Crownposts" using DuckDuckGo in Safari . I then clicked on one of the options returned by my search, but was taken to a site that looks like Apple.com and given a notification that my Mac is infected. Claims to be a service being provided under the auspices of AppleCare using McAfee to scan and remove said virus. Is it safe to follow the instructions to attempt to remove the virus, or is this a scam?

Scam advertisement. Lied about Apple. Lied about AppleCare. Lied about scanning for “viruses”, too. It’d be a security catastrophe if a website could scan. Ignore the advertisement.
