What does the message backup not encrypted mean?

when trying to back up via time machine to a external hard drive, I am getting a message that says “ backup not encrypted. Time machine is backing up an encrypted disk to an unencrypted disk”

what does this mean? Do I have to fix something?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.14

About "Encrypted" Vs. "Unencrypted":

It is saying that what you will be performing is insecure. Encrypted disks have passwords. Unencrypted disks do not use passwords. So, if you are looking to backup your computer, use Disk Utility.

Format A Disk to Encrypt it:

If you are concerned with the items being insecure (due to not being encrypted), then use Disk Utility to format a drive with encryption. From there, transfer all the data over, to the newly-encrypted, external hard drive.  Go Here: Erase and Reformat a Storage Device in Disk Utility on Mac - Apple Support

Storing the Password:

Keep a hardcopy, handwritten note of your password. Do not share it with anyone whomsoever. And, moreover, store it in a private location that only you are knowledgeable of, and only you have access to.
