When I use Command Shift 5, it does as it says, but has no way to stop recording. I have no idea if I recorded, I cannot find any recording, or if I did, I dont know if I even stopped. Now I have a box on my screen and no way to exit the function.
The rest of my screen is shaded.

along with kaz-k's reply, a clickable "stop button" appears on your menubar when you launch a screen recording.
Thanks. I just ran a test and moved my mouse everywhere. Nothing pops up.
So far repeating the command shift 5 does work so I guess I can stick to that.
It just seems strange that the official instructions from apple how to do a screen recording do not explain how to stop your recording.
I assumed it was linked to this Q&A as I originated my post from the instructions provided by apple.

Seems not for me. I just took a full screen shot during the process. Attached here is a full screen screenshot while I was video capturing.

Strangely the instructions don't tell the reader how to stop it.
if the above is a full screen screenshot, then you have the menubar set to be automatically shown and hidden. you need to mouse over the top of your screen to see the menubar.
