Since updating to Ventura 13.0.1 the icons for my external hard drives relocate themselves on the desktop. This seems to happen when the Mac has been in SLEEP mode for awhile. I will drag them back to where I want them, but overnight some (but not all) will move to a different space on the desktop.

Good suggestion, but alas it didn't solve the problem. It happens every time the Mac goes to sleep. I made a new arrangement of the icons and it was still the same drives that rearranged themselves. Now trying to discover what is different about those drives from the one that stay seated.
One thing I have 'fiddled with' over the years is related to 'snap to grid'. I find that drives that are aligned with the grid do not seem to get moved around as much.
My recollection is that if you hold Command when you release the icon, it used to align to grid, and may stay there better.
Thanks for the suggestion. I've played with those options, but it had no affect. Of my 7 external hard drives, 4 remain in their assigned positions -- the remaining 3 will move when the Mac is asleep. Shutdown and restart leaves ALL the drives in their assigned positions. Only during 'sleep' do these same 3 icons sneak about.
Not sure if this applies to Ventura but if you right click on desktop, then select view options then select sort by "none" and see if this resolves the issue.
