I use the japanese kana on my desktop. I restarted my iMac and it has disappeared.
I already had the problem last year and someone in the community gave me the fix. but I cannot find it again
iMac 21.5″ 4K, macOS 12.6
Click on the icon for the Japanese input system in the menu bar at the top right of the screen and then go to the bottom. You should see an item called "type using kana table".

Have you looked in Font Book for the font? I have two kana fonts:
The one on the left has to be downloaded before it can be activated for use.

If you turn it on from the Japanese IM, it should stay on your desktop even when you leave that IM for some other keyboard.

I need to get the international characters panel menu but now I am on macOSMonterrey and I cannot seem to find a way to get it back that gave me a small kana alphabet that remained on the desktop, to use on occasion . I had it on my desktop for last 2 years but I had to restart my PC and it did not come back.

the fix was indicated to me by Tom Gewecke on Dec 20, 2021. but now my iMac has been upgraded to macOSMonterrey and I cannot find the international characters panel showing the flags.

You should see this in the top right corner, with the input menu in the middle
