USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter for MacBook Pro not working

I purchased the USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter from Apple 1 month ago. The only port in this adapter that works is the USB-A. The USB-C port does not work. Is this a malfunction of the equipment or is there a setting on the MAC that will fix this problem?

The USB-C port on this adapter is only meant for charging the laptop. Notice the symbol next to the USB-C port showing a power symbol.
