Would love to use my old iMac just sitting around as an external monitor.

Old question, looking for NEW ANSWER

I have a 2020 M1 chip MacBook Pro (with VENTURA) and want to use a 2009 iMac 21.5" (with HIGH SIERRA) screen as an external monitor to mirror what is on the MacBook Pro screen - is this possible? I bought these cables: Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter -

result: Nothing.

NO, target display mode and CMD + F2 (nor CMD + F2+ fn) not working. Restarted several times, cables plugged, unplugged several times. Nothing.

Is there ANY solution? app, or cable, wired or wireless? I hope I gave all the info needed for an answer:D

Also only 27-inch 2009 iMacs supported TDM, so neither of your devices is compatible.

This is the definitive document on the subject, not the dreck about TDM that is spread over the internet like post-processed horse feed

Use your iMac as a display with target display mode - Apple Support

Apple started the deprecation of Target Display Mode in Late 2014, and threw the last shovel of dirt in its face in Early 2020.

Hi, ZS, yup, you’re correct, TDM is not supported at all on a 2020 M1 MacBook Pro… apart from something called “duet display” which you’d have to buy, there’s no other real solution… it might be easier to get a tv with an hdmi port/socket/input and use that to mirror what’s on your MacBook Pro screen
