M1 using Mid-2011 iMac as monitor

Hi, I have a 2020 Macbook Air and would like to use my mid-2011 iMac as a monitor. The iMac OS is High Sierra, but I can't seem to get the screen from my MacBook Air to mirror onto the iMac. Currently connecting a mini DisplayPort cable on the iMac to HDMI (usb c adapter connected to MacBook Air).

Does anyone know how I can get this to work?

Would love to use my old iMac just sitting around as an external monitor. Old question, looking for NEW ANSWER I have a 2020 M1 chip MacBook Pro (with VENTURA) and want to use a 2009 iMac 21.5" (with HIGH SIERRA) screen as an external monitor to mirror what is on the MacBook Pro screen - is this possible? NO, target display mode and CMD + F2 (nor CMD + F2+ fn) not working. Restarted several times, cables plugged, unplugged several times. Nothing. Connect my iMac (2021) to my Macbook Air (2017) to use as a monitor? Is there a way to connect my iMac (2021) to my MacBook Air (2017) to use the Macbook as a second monitor? I have a Thunderbolt 2 to USB-C lead and that doesn't seem to be able to connect them. My iMac recognises my other apple devices, but not the MacBook. Whereas, my MacBook recognises my iMac. But all my software is on the iMac. Is it possible to link the two?

You can't AirPlay to a 2011 iMac. It would have to be a 2019 or later iMac.

There are two possible options that may work, Duet and Luna Display.

I've been reading that target display mode won't work, but is there a way to mirror the screen onto the iMac using airplay? The iMac is showing that it is discoverable but my MacBook air does not sense the iMac, it only senses the iPad. My iPad also can't see the iMac.
