Mail bounce back

2 different people, sending me emails today, had the emails returned with this message:

554 5.7.1 [HM08} Message rejected due to local policy. Please visit https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204137

What gives?? Never have had this problem before in 20 years of using apple email.

I have a mail server using DKIM and SPF, and sending mail successfully to loads of other domains / mail servers. Apart from the disreputable uceprotectl3 list which has blacklisted the entire subnets for the hosting company I am using (Digital Ocean), I am not on any blacklists. From the server, icloud will accept emails from one domain but not another (I setup an icloud email address to test). The smtp error message refers to local policies, but links to a generic spam advice posting. I am not sending unsolicited email, and in fact the emails are human replies to ones received from icloud customers. Unfortunately the smtp error message in the logs doesn't say anything useful like what actual policy is causing the message being rejected. Mail message blocked from a reliable known sender Why would mail not allow me to receive a message from someone I email with frequently: I'm also attaching a screen shot of the email that was returned. It said: The response from the remote server was: 554 5.7.1 [HM08] Message rejected due to local policy. That means the folks administering the mail server you’re using have rejected the arriving mail as likely spam.

That can be because the sender’s mail server has issues, or because the mail itself appears indistinguishable from spam. Or because some other user of the originating mail server has been spamming hard.

In the case of messages arriving at Apple iCloud mail, read the linked article: Postmaster information for iCloud Mail - Apple Support

The folks running the sending server can contact Apple using the contact info in the article. Or your senders can potentially send less spam-ish mail.
