Messages does not open on previous conversation, it goes back to message list after ios16

This is extremely annoying, I rely on reviewing old texts for billing clients so what I used to do in the past is, go through my messages and go all the way up the conversation and then switch to another app to capture the hrs worked, and before, if I went back to messages, it would display the last conversation I was in which was great but now, I look for the message, scroll all the way up, then go to my other app and when I return to continue to read the messages, it goes back to the message list!! so I have to go back and find the message and scroll all the way up and I have to do this for hundreds of messages so, it is so messed up and so much time consuming.. why is this happen all of the sudden??? Please help!

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities. This might be due to Background App Refresh settings. This setting can prevent or allow apps to refresh in the background. We found the following information in Switch apps on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support.

"Use Background App Refresh

After you switch to a different app, some apps run for a short period of time before they're set to a suspended state. Apps that are in a suspended state aren’t actively in use, open, or taking up system resources. With Background App Refresh, suspended apps can check for updates and new content.

If you want suspended apps to check for new content, go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and turn on Background App Refresh. If you quit an app from the app switcher, it might not be able to run or check for new content before you open it again."

If this only happens with Messages and your Background App Refresh settings look OK, troubleshoot the app itself using the applicable steps from If an app on your iPhone or iPad stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or won’t open - Apple Support.

" 1 Close and reopen the app

Force the app to close. Then open the app to see if it works as expected.

2 Restart your device

Restart your iPhone or restart your iPad. Then open the app to see if it works as expected.

3 Check for updates

To see if updates are available for the app, open the App Store, tap your profile icon, then scroll down to see if updates are available. If updates aren't available for the app, update the software on your iPhone or iPad."
