Notes help? Occasional white text on white, black text on black

Occasionally while using Notes the text on a note will disappear. Checking other stored notes will look the same but its actually that the text has changed to white text on a white background, making the text impossible to read or edit.

If I switch in or out of dark mode, it doesn’t fix it. It just shows the opposite: black text on black background.

If I restart my iPhone 13, it fixes the problem with the text showing up again, but it will happen again after awhile after restarting.

It has been an ongoing problem,

appearing for a few years now, formerly on my iPhone 8 with the same occurrence. Formerly I was able to select the text to see it within the note, but I don’t seem to do this anymore.

It typically or only happens while I am actually typing on a note; new or existing.

I find no help within AppleForums for this particular problem.

Hi lian37,

If the behavior persists after confirming your device is up to date, we want to confirm whether this occurs with notes syncing to a specific account. This can often help us isolate and determine whether there is an account issue.

To verify whether you have more than one account syncing with the Notes app, do the following:

  1. Open the Notes app.
  2. If necessary, tap "Folders" in the top left-hand corner.

Here, you should see the different note folders you have, along with the account they're syncing with.

Create a note within each account using the steps in Create and format notes on iPhone. If you find that this is isolated to one specific account, we'd recommend reaching out to your email service provider. If this occurs with all accounts, and/or only iCloud, contact Apple Support.

Take care!

Hello lian37,

Have you checked in Settings to see what the default for Notes is set to?

Found in the article Create and format notes on iPhone - Apple Support is the following tip, and you can find more information about Notes on the iPhone and settings there as well.

Tip: To choose a default style for the first line in all new notes, go to Settings > Notes > New Notes Start With.

If you still need help, reach back out to us.

Take care!

lian37,

In this case we'd recommend making sure your device is up-to-date. This will ensure you have all the latest fixes and features. Here's how you can check for updates wirelessly:

1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
4. If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.

You can read the full context of the resource here: Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

If things persist you can reach out for additional support here: Get Support

Take care.

Thank you!

In settings, Notes, New Notes Start with: I selected Title.

Changing this setting to Body, then starting a new note does not fix the problem, nor does any other choice for new notes: subheading, or heading. When this problem is happening I can create a new note, type something into it (although I can’t see what I am typing), and when I go back to the list of notes I can see that there is a new note listed, so the keyboard is working, just not the text color.

I can still see my list of Notes headings, there’s just nothing in the notes themselves until I restart my phone.

In settings, Notes, Viewing, Note Backgrounds; there is a choice for “dark” or “light”. It doesn’t matter which setting I choose. The content of the note doesn’t show.

Other than that setting, I don’t see another default that would effect what the problem is.
