my wi-fi connection keeps dropping

Why do i have to turn off my wi-fi then turn it back on to access the internet? My internet connection is really slow. There is a lot of buffering.

Hello vmjames,

To determine the best steps to resolve this, we'll need to isolate the behavior a bit more. Does this occur when connected to other networks? If you're unsure, please test to see if the same issue occurs with a different Wi-Fi network.

If this doesn't occur with other networks, it could be related to the settings for your network. Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points has recommendations to help ensure you're getting the best performance and reliability when connecting your Mac to Wi-Fi.

We'd also recommend checking for potential interference, which is a common cause of slow or dropped connections via Wi-Fi. Resolve Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues caused by wireless interference has some great information about this.

"How to reduce wireless interference

These general steps can help achieve a cleaner, stronger wireless signal:

  • Bring your Wi-Fi device closer to your Wi-Fi router. Bring the Bluetooth devices that are connecting to each other closer together.
  • Avoid using your wireless devices near common sources of interference, such as power cables, microwave ovens, fluorescent lights, wireless video cameras, and cordless phones.
  • Reduce the number of active devices that use the same wireless frequency band. Both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi devices use the 2.4 GHz band, but many Wi-Fi devices can use the 5 GHz band instead. If your Wi-Fi router supports both bands, it might help to connect more of your Wi-Fi devices to the 5GHz band. Some dual-band routers manage this for you automatically.
  • Configure your Wi-Fi router to use a different Wi-Fi channel, or have it scan for the channel with the least interference. Most routers perform this scan automatically on startup or when reset."

Cheers!

Rachel suggestions did not solve the problem, neither did those of the analyst in the Chat session or the telephone support analyst.

The problems were that I had Adware on my computer, and there were over 10 programs that started automatically, i.e. Chrome and Microsoft updates, which was slowing down or preventing my MacBook Pro from connecting to the Internet.

Once MalwareBytes was installed and ran, and all of the programs that automatically started during power on were deactivated I have had no trouble connecting to and maintaining network connectivity.

Thanks Darlene. You rock!
