Macbook Pro mid 2014 on OS Catalina not booting after 1 TB Aura SSD upgrade

Hello,

I was trying to upgrade SSD on this machine using Aura SSD.

It looked like process went well using Time Machine recovery backup file with System Restore.

However Macbook is not booting from this new drive showing crossed o.

Using disc utility with System Restore looks like everything is properly installed and new SSD with Installed MacOS is visible there.

I put back original Mac SSD and laptop works well.

Do you know what could create this problem ?

Thanks

Thank you for very detailed explanation and instructions !

Looks like my mistake was to use restore from TM option right away in Internet Recovery Mode instead of installing Mac OS first. I didn't want to install Big Sur which was listed there due to reports that it can brick some MBP's from 2014.

I've created bootable Catalina USB installer and will try again when my daughter gets home for Christmas.

I am going to update when I am done.

Hi dariusz90,

Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities. If your Mac starts up to a circle with a line through it, here are a few steps to try:

1. Restart your device to see if the issue is still there: Shut down or restart your Mac - Apple Support

2. Confirm that your device is using the most recent software to rule out the older one: Update macOS on Mac - Apple Support

How did you set up the new SSD? It sounds like you used Disk Utility to "Restore" the original drive to the new SSD, but Disk Utility doesn't work well to "clone" macOS boot drives.

Your two options are to install macOS to the new SSD (installed internally), then use TM to restore from the backup. You can either boot the online macOS installer from Internet Recovery Mode (Command + R for booting the online installer for the OS currently installed, or Command + Option + R to access the Big Sur installer). However, Internet Recovery Mode will sometimes only boot the online installer for the OS which originally shipped with the laptop from the factory which won't work with the Aura NVMe SSD. You can create a bootable macOS USB installer using the instructions in this Apple article:

Create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support

Or use the third party app Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the macOS boot drive. You will first need to physically install the Aura SSD and boot from the original Apple SSD externally so you can run CCC (make sure to properly erase the new physical SSD as GUID partition and APFS (top option), you may need to click "View" within Disk Utility and select "Show All Devices" so the physical drives appear on the left pane of Disk Utility). This option requires using an OWC Envoy Pro Enclosure with the original Apple OEM SSD (this enclosure is not compatible with the Aura SSD....AFAIK there are no enclosures or adapters for the Aura SSD).

Apple pulled the bad Big Sur installer for the 2014 MBPro for several months after the release of Big Sur because of it bricking some 2014 laptops. The current Big Sur installer is fine to use on the MBPro 2014 models.
