Podcasts don't sync between iPhone and Mac

I mean, they do not sync at all. It's like two different applications.

An episode or show added to iPhone's Podcasts app library doesn't show in the Mac app, and vice versa.

I've selected "sync library" on both devices.

The other apps I need synced - reminders, notes - have no issues.

The fact that they don't even appear to attempt to sync makes me think that it is not a bug but instead I'm doing something wrong. Any ideas will be very appreciated!

I can't even see them from my Mac in order to tell it to sync to my phone.

I manually sync downloaded episodes to my phone

Everything else shows up in the sync page: Music, books, TV shows etc, but I do not see ANY podcasts to sync. They are all there available in the podcast app on the mac, but can't get them into the phone through the sync (finder) app. Did something change?

iOS 16.0.3 on iPhone 14

I am having this issue, almost. Some podcasts do show up as available to sync, but it's the ones I listened to last year. The newer ones show up and play fine on my iPhone, but are not in the checkbox list when I try to sync from my Mac.

Well wait a minute. I noticed something: All my podcasts are there and downloading and everything is in good order if I go to the Podcasts app on the iPhone, because I set them up in the Podcasts app on the iPhone. So I don't actually need to sync from my iMac to get my podcasts, although it is annoying that something doesn't work "as expected" on an Apple product. Maybe the software can't figure out whether to sync from the Mac or to follow directions from the Podcasts app on the iPhone?
