iPhone Backup on External HD

It is the first time to take iPhone backup (there's no old one) and I would like to take it on an external hard disk connected to Mac as the internal hard disk has no sufficient space. Any recommendations? I have iTunes as it is not compatible with my Mac machine anymore!

There is no supported way to back up to an external drive, as it is a security vulnerability to do so.
