Family setup no longer available in Australia - Truphone not taking more customers

I bought my daughter an apple watch so we could contact her without needing to get her a phone. We specifically chose the apple watch so we could control contacts etc

We bought one for our son about a year earlier and it works well.

However, this is no longer an option as Truphone (the sole provider in AU) is no longer taking new customers. As a result family setup isnt working in AU. We returned the watch and apple gave us a refund.

Apple have not updated their website and Ive tried emailing and calling no no avail. My question is this - Does anyone know if Apple is working on finding an alternative MVNO or carrier for this service? Im still keen to get one for my daughter, but if no fix is coming then I'll just move on. It would be good if Apple would change its website or at least acknowledge my complaint..

If anyone has any insight be great to hear.

cheers

I have tried multiple times to set up an account with Truphone and it keeps giving an error message once you input payment details. They have not responded to emails and the phone number that apple support services provided for them is disconnected. If Truphone is not taking any new customers, apple needs to remove their details and find another service provider for the products they are selling. Very disappointed by the whole process. Have wasted hours trying to sort this out.

Hi it worked fine for me on the 26 or 27th of Dec, and it is working fine since (they share Optus network) so the coverage is 'ok'.

I did have an issue using one card or paypall (or something can't remember what) but after closing / re-opening the browswer and using a different card it was ok.

It's a bit of mess. Apple need to remove Optus from supported Apple Watch carriers or put a note that, they won't sell you an Apple Watch plan (family or not) without you buying the watch through them which took me 3 hours of their tech support to find out.

Not that it helps you but one of my boys mates has it set up via Truphone too and it works ok for them.

The apple support guy was helpful by the way in that he tried hard. Now it's working I'm fine but, I'm somewhat unimpressed, in that the website was confusing some pages made me thing that Optus did family sharing, they don't and as above in fact they don't even let you have a Apple Watch data plan at all unless you buy the watch via them, which is a bit late after I'd bought it from Apple, and I'm not really looking for a 24 month commitment to Optus again.

Never tried Telstra (maybe give them a try) I don't think they do family plan, but maybe you can pair it to an old phone (that was going to be my plan B)

Family paired Watches (paired to a parent's iphone) need to have a cellular plan otherwise they are pretty useless when away from the iphone.

If the local network provider does not provision to Apple Watches then family pairing may not be possible, however the Watches can be with a different provider when family paired.

Getting the child their own iPhone 8 or newer is the way round this and just turn off the cellular.
