Watch waking constantly when charging

Has anyone solved the issue of your Apple Watch waking up constantly when it keeps topping itself up to 100% overnight? Like others this has only happened on my S6 since Watch OS9 was installed - I'm guessing it used to have some kind of buffer that allowed it to either trickle charge, or some kind of thing where dropping to 99% etc was ok and didn't make it do the charge cycle and keep visually and audibly confirming its back at 100%?

Two more things you can try

First in in the Watch App on the phone, in the My Watch tab, in General, look for either Nightstand mode (USA) or Bedside mode (UK) and turn it on. Then make sure the watch is on charge on its side with the crown facing upwards and it is then in nightstand mode and should not wake you up. Tap the table or the Watch to see the time.

Second thing is - only if you have regular weekday bedtime and wake up times and not on occasional night shift - in the Watch Settings, Battery, Battery health, turn on Optimised Charging. It should pause chrging at 80% until just before you are due to wake up.

Thanks for the replies - however I have tried all these items already, prior to Watch OS9 I could go an entire day and still have 30-40% battery charge left right until the exact day I upgraded to WatchOS9 - now I have days I don't make it through my waking hours.

I have optimised charging on already, my battery app shows that its charging continuously from 12am to 6am which is the same sleep cycle each day, but it continues to wake throughout the night, realising last night its also when its not even at 100% charge. Some nights its waking around every 5 minutes, others it can go a half hour between doing it, then this morning it was on from 12-6 and had only charged back to 64%.

So frustrated right now - there are so many people having this issue on WatchOS9 across the forums and there is seemingly no solution. Is there a way to go back to Watch OS8? Instantly dropping to less than 2/3 the battery performance hasn't been worth it at all.

I am not aware of many such problems on here. No you cannot go back to OS8 and you should not need to.

Ensure that Do Not Disturb is turned on during sleep times...

  • set a scheduled Focus DND on your iPhone, then Watch app, My Watch, General, Focus, Mirror my iPhone.

I assume you keep the iphone turned on, locked and on charge all night too. You should.

If nothing improves, erase the Watch and pair again without restoring the backup and start afresh...

  • Watch Settings, General, Reset, erase all cnotent and settings

Hello jadeg01,

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities.

It sounds like your Apple Watch continues to charge to 100% when it discharges to 99%, is that correct?

If we have that right, can you confirm that this occurs regardless of the time that you place your Apple Watch on the charger, or does it only occur at night? Let's check the charging details to see when your Apple Watch is reporting it connects to the charger. This may help to provide additional details if there is a discrepancy, and we'd recommend checking out Low Power Mode with watchOS 9 to learn more details about that. We'll include some details below, and you can find more information here: Check your battery and charge your Apple Watch - Apple Support

See charging details in Settings

Open the Settings app, then tap Battery. Your current charge level appears, along with a detailed charging graph.

Low Power Mode in watchOS 9

Your Apple Watch with watchOS 9 can enter Low Power Mode, which turns off and changes some features to save battery life. Learn more about using Low Power Mode on your Apple Watch.

Let us know if that provides additional insight to what may be occurring, and provide more details on what you see if you need more help. Try using a different charger with your Apple Watch to see if that changes the results, as well.

Take care!
