Safari lags

Over the past several months Safari will lag or respond extremely slow. I'm running on a MacBook Pro 16" 2019, first with Monterey, now Ventura. Safari has been kept up-to-date. I empty the cache a couple of times a week because of the slowness and initially it will respond quicker, but within a few days I need to empty the cache again.

I can open the same website in Chrome at the same time Safari is trying to respond and the site opens on Chrome in under 1 second while Safari continues to spin. I have gone through steps of removing all extensions on Safari and the issue continues.

It seems somewhere along the line an Apple update broke Safari. I have no issues with the other browsers that I use (Edge and Chrome).

Hey rotorblades,

It sounds like you're having issues with website loading slowly in Safari.

We'd recommend reviewing the information in this article as it provides steps to take to help resolve issues loading webpages in Safari: If Safari on Mac doesn't open a webpage or isn’t working as expected - Apple Support

  1. "Reload the page
  2. Check Safari extensions
  3. Check Safari settings
  4. Test with a private window
  5. Install software updates
  6. Check VPN or other security software
  7. Check network settings"

Thanks!

Hello rotorblades,

Thanks for that info. It's possible this is outside of the Mac, such as busy times in your area, or server overload for your Internet Service Provider, but we can keep checking with you.

The first thing we need to do is to ensure there is no interference. You can use this article to ensure other items in your house or office are not causing interference. Resolve Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues caused by wireless interference - Apple Support

Next, check if this is occurring in safe mode. Safe mode will tell us if the issue is related to a startup item or plugins. Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support

If the issue is not occurring, restart and see if it's working in your account. If not, check the troubleshooting in "If an issue doesn't happen in safe mode."

If you also have issues while in safe mode, please make a test user and then test. A newly created  unmodified test user will let us know if the issue is isolated to your account, or system wide. Please check this article will help you make a test user: Add a user or group on Mac - Apple Support

Once you test, let us know if it's occurring in safe mode or not, and if it also occurs in the test user or not. Thanks and have a wonderful day.

Jeff W - thank you for the reply. I have done every one of those things, multiple times every week - and that is the issue, it would seem that if I can get the webpage to load in an acceptable amount of time a couple of days later I would not have to go through all the troubleshooting steps again. And, I can use either of my other two browsers at the same time, on the same webpage, as Safari and they load the site in milliseconds.

The sites that I have trouble with are many and they are all very common sites - this Apple site, Google, Bing, Facebook, LinkedIn, car manufacturer sites, Amazon, financial services sites.

Currently I have no extensions enabled with Safari, my software is kept up-to-date. My wife has an older MacBook Pro, that reached its end-of-life for Apple upgrades and updates and cannot be upgraded to either Monterey or Ventura. That older MacBook Pro has absolutely no issues with Safari lagging.

I could understand if a particular site or sites always had the lagging issue and the issue resolved after I "fixed" whatever might be causing the issue, but it always returns multiple times a week. The multitude of sites and the inconsistency in whether the site lags or not, and the fact that other browsers have never exhibited the same issues, makes me believe they are inherent issues in Safari itself or Safari in the world of macOS Monterey and Ventura.

I've rebooted my router when the issue happens, sometimes that resolves the issue, other time it doesn't. My activity is mainly download type activity, very little or no upload activity. My internet speed consistently clocks in at 300 Mbps or better.

Eric-F - thanks for the reply. If this were busy times in my area, why would Safari lag, while at the very same time I can open other browsers, Chrome and Edge, and they always return the exact same page on the exact same site in milliseconds? And I would close Safari, reopen, and try launching the site (within a few seconds of the other browsers having no issues) and it continues to lag? And it's always Safari with the issue, never Chrome or Edge. I would think internet traffic would affect all of my browsers to some extent.

That, plus my wife is on her old MacBook Pro, and she has no lagging issues at the same time that I am having lagging issues. She uses Safari almost exclusively.

I had this problem after Ventura was installed. I cleared cookies and did all the usual but it did not work. All worked well with Chrome but safari so slow and sites taking forever to load. I have antivirus software installed with AVG which includes various levels of protection to prevent scammers and hackers. One of these layers is their 'web shield" that "blocks web and unsafe downloads". I turned it off and suddenly Safari was working normally, and incredible on turning AVG web shield back on Safari continues to be OK (so far!).

So, if you have any third party VPN, virus scanner, hacking protection then try turning it off or uninstalling and seeing if Safari works OK. I think this is part of the protection built in with Safari which is interfering with any other third party software.

I hope this helps.

Speigal, thank you for the reply. I deactivated 3rd party add-ons and extensions on Safari and it continues to happen. I have actually changed internet providers in the last few days (fiber infrastructure) and the issue still happens on Safari only.

I have to think that something Apple did in either Monterey and Ventura is causing the issue with Safari. My wife runs a 9-year old MacBook Pro that cannot be upgraded anymore (since Monterey) and with the exception of the macOS, is identical to my newer MacBook Pro, has no issues with Safari. I have even completely reset my MacBook Pro back to factory and reinstalled macOS and that did not help.

I am having the exact same issue you are having. I did all the troubleshooting with no resolve. Chrome loads super fast while Safari has horrible loading times. I have both a M1 MacBook Air and an M2 MacBook Air running macOS 13.1 with the same

problem. I can conclude that the problem IS Safari. The issue started when Ventura was installed. I have done several web searches on the issue but apparently I was the only one in the universe having this issue (go figure). Good to see that someone else is having this issue so that one day it might get fixed! In the meantime, I am forced to use Chrome and I hate Google products because they just can't stay out of our business.

I'm sorry to hear this. Have you uninstalled all antiviral, VPN, computer clean-up or tune-up apps? These are likely to be interfering with MacOS and duplicating what Ventura is doing to protect you. I am not expert so will await other replies. My feeling is this is a conflict of 3rd party software in someway but which software it is not clear. With two computers you could afford to clean install on one of them. After wiping everything off the hard disk, reformatting and clean install MacOS, then slowly reload apps until the problem is recreated. Otherwise contact Apple Support.

I am not using any antiviral or VPN. I have reinstalled macOS on both machines with no change. I did hours of turning everything off in Safari and back on with no effect. I have cleared the cache, I have deleted Safari and restarted. Nothing makes a difference and it is happening on both Macs. Google Chrome works flawlessly. I prefer Safari because it is integrated with Apple products better and there isn't as much snooping as Google. The problem exists no mater where I go (at school or home). I am certain it is an issue with either the software, or worst case the hardware. I am perplexed because no one complains of this issue. Safari can take up to 30 seconds to load a page that takes Chrome 3 seconds to load. I find that unacceptable. Sorry for my rant but I expect my expensive computers to work when a tested version of software is released for public consumption. If it had been a beta then all bets are off. Also, the latest patch just added a bunch of stuff. Apple needs to fix bugs first in my opinion.
