I think you already know the answer. If you want to run current and future operating systems on your Mac......you will need a new Mac.
10 years is considered a long life for a computer, your iMac has served you well. But, it's time.

the problem is that I've used it to create a lot of things and in order to use those files I need to some software that works just fine on this machine but also will be gone if I shut it down. And the replacement software in graphics and video production will cost more than the cost of a new machine and from experience I've found that often they can't read the old files.
It won't let me update my new phone. That's my main problem.
I have a 2022 iPad but it has it's limitations as well.
There are a lot of people like me who have thousands of dollars invested in technology that still works fine but the replacement is really expensive and doesn't necessarily work with what you've already done.
There is nothing wrong with running High Sierra on it forever. I also have apps that won’t work in later versions; I just don’t update one of my 3 Macs, so I can continue to run that software.
And I’m pretty sure High Sierra can still update the newest iPhones as long as you keep iTunes up to date.
Buy a newer machine to replace your 11 year old Mac.
Update your computer. You can recycle it through apple, when you’re purchase you’re new one.
see my reply below, I have a new computer but it can't read a lot of old stuff I need to preserve

What model of iPhone do you have? Unless it is ancient, you don't need a computer to update the iPhone..
