I just updated my Mac and it won't let me watch Netflix anymore and says I need to install Microsoft silverlight plug in or watch it on safari but it isn't letting me watch it on safari and there are no updates needed.

If you're trying to watch Netflix and one of these things happens:
It's because your current browser version is out of date and uses the Microsoft Silverlight plug-in to play Netflix. Microsoft no longer supports this plug-in.
To keep watching Netflix, you'll need to update your browser to a version that supports HTML5:
