star rating in the Music app

After updating to iOS 16, the star rating in the Music app disappeared. How to set it up again? Thanks.

Hello dima_megamozg,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

If we understand your post correctly, you want to know how to add back the feature Show Star Ratings. We're happy to help!

"Rate music in your library

  1. Go to Settings  > Music.
  2. Turn on Show Star Ratings.
  3. In Music, touch and hold a song in your library, tap Rate Song, then choose a rating from one to five stars.

Song ratings sync to all devices that use the same Apple ID.

This option appears only if you already have star ratings from a synced library on your device."

Hi dima_megamozg,

Quoted in the article above is a statement that the setting will only be displayed if you have a rating from a synced library. To help isolate the issue, rate a song in a library on your computer, and then see if the setting appears after syncing the music to your iPhone either via Sync Library if you're an Apple Music member, or by syncing via iTunes or Finder. Those steps should help to clear up the issue. Check out those steps here:

Let us know if that helps.

Kind regards.

Hi,

Checking in to confirm that I, too, have no way to actually turn on/off the "show star ratings" setting in iOS on either my iPhone or iPad. Both have iOS 16.1.1 - I can't seem to find anywhere that notes which version of Apple Music is installed, but both are set to automatically update apps, so it is almost certainly the most recent release.

What's really weird - if I pull up "settings" and search "star rating" in the top-level search bar, the setting shows up in the search results. When I select it, I am returned to the main Music settings page, but there's no "show star rating" toggle to select, and I also don't see any sub-menus where it could be hiding.

Looks like a broken link or they have dropped support for the setting altogether? Either way, it's very frustrating to have the setting visible in search but not actually accessible.

I think I figured out the issue, or at least a solution for me. I decided to pull up iTunes on my windows PC that I have used to cloud sync my personal music library and see if the setting could be enabled there. Go to Edit, then Preferences, and make sure you are on the General tab in the Preferences menu that appears. About halfway down the list you will see "Show:" and three checkboxes. The third there is "Star Ratings" and this was unchecked on my iTunes install (not sure why, perhaps it defaults to unchecked on a new install of the iTunes application).

Once I checked this in iTunes, I returned to my iPhone and went to the Settings > Music page. Nothing appeared yet. I gave the whole thing a few minutes, figuring it might take time for the various apps to sync to my account settings in the cloud. Sure enough, the setting is now visible on my iOS devices. Had to be enabled manually on each device, so there must be some kind of global "star ratings" setting and then a device-specific setting to view the star ratings that do get stored.

Hope this helps!
