Music Equalizer Not Engaging Properly

I find when I open Apple Music, the equalizer defaults to 0db across the board, even though the equalizer is "on" and set for R&B. If I deselect it and then select it again, then it engages.

This has been an issue for the past four years. In fact, I had been using a universal EQ as a workaround, but figure they had fixed it by now.

I guess not?

Thank you. But that doesn't get to my issue. Regardless of my EQ setting, when I start Apple Music and play a song, it has no EQ on it. The EQ says it is on R&B, but it doesn't "turn on" until I toggle On to Off and then back to On on the EQ page (confusing). Then the EQ starts working.

This isn't normal and shouldn't be happening. And this has happened on multiple computers and multiple OSs for at least the last five years. This isn't anything soon.

The only work around I know is to purchase an EQ app for the computer. Then Music will follow that EQ.

But the internal Apple Music EQ does not just come on with the first song played, even though it shows that it is turned on. I have to toggle off and on again for engagement.

Hello watsonfromarlington,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

We want to help ensure the EQ setting is staying to what you set it at so you can get the most from Apple Music.

As it sounds like you're taking the correct steps to adjust the settings, please check for any pending updates next, which can help make sure macOS is working as expected. Use these steps to check for updates: Update macOS on Mac - Apple Support

"Use Software Update

Before installing new software, it's a good idea to back up your Mac.

  1. From the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen:
    • Choose System Settings. Then click General in the sidebar, and Software Update on the right.
    • Or choose System Preferences. Then click Software Update.

2. If Software Update finds new software, click the Update Now or Upgrade Now button to install it.

3. Enter your administrator password, if asked. During installation, your Mac might restart, and you might see a progress bar or blank screen several times.

If Software Update says that your Mac is up to date, then no new software is currently available for your Mac model. Software Update shows only updates and upgrades that are compatible with your Mac."

If the issue continues when using the latest software, try restarting your MacBook Air to see if that helps.

Please let us know if you have further questions.

Cheers!

Hello watsonfromarlington,

Thanks for your post to Apple Support Communities. We understand you are asking about the equalizer within Apple Music resetting to 0 unexpectedly. We're not sure which work around you are referring to, are your current equalizer settings saved as presets?

We'll be working from this article: Adjust the sound quality in Music on Mac - Apple Support

We'd recommend creating a preset if you haven't already. Test to see if that helps with this issue:

1. In the Music app on your Mac, choose Window > Equalizer.
2. Drag the sliders to adjust the frequency settings.
3. Choose Make Preset from the pop-up menu and name your preset.

You can also create a preset for specific songs. Once you've had a chance to test these steps, reply back with how it goes and the details of the work around you mentioned.

Take care.
