brother MFC won't scan last page

I have a Brother MFC-7840W that for years worked beautifully with a Mac Pro running 10.13.6 High Sierra. No issues printing or scanning that I can recall. Brother is on the wired network, not directly attached to either computer.

I'm now using a current M1 MacBook Pro running 12.6. For some reason when scanning a multipage document it fails to save the scan of the last page. Doesn't matter how many pages it is, the last one always gets dropped. The paper is physically fed through the machine correctly and it seems to scan just fine, built in scanner software even shows a preview of the last page. But somewhere along the way the last page is dropped and isn't appended to the PDF like all the other ones are.

Any suggestions?

I've tried that and the MFC-7840W is not compatible with iPrint&Scan. Very frustrating because it is in fact scanning all the pages, it's just that the last one never gets written to file. And if I try to scan a single page the software will hang and not complete the job. If I have a single page to scan I put in a dummy page after the real thing. It will scan the first and not write the dummy to the PDF. Everything worked fine for years, strange that the drivers would still mostly work but fail in such an odd fashion.
