"Swipe up to recover" after entering the passcode

I suspect this starting happening after updating to iOS 16.0.2.

The problem in a nutshell is:

  1. The iPhone restarts and displays the lock screen
  2. After entering the passcode the device freezes for a few seconds
  3. (Sometimes shows a black loading screen and 2nd bullet is repeated)
  4. Then shows the white screen "Swipe up to recover"

The weird thing is that this has happened to me before in the case scenario where my iPhone ran out of battery. After reading around forums for other users the following worked:

Many users have got rid of the iPhone stuck on swipe up to upgrade error after a force restart. Force restart iPhone 14, 13, 12, 11, XS, XR, X: Quickly press and release the Volume Up button > Quickly press and release the Volume Down button > Press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.

Although this is for the white screen "Swipe up to upgrade", nevertheless I did the same which did not work at first but after several force restarts and a few "Volume up + Side button" power offs my iPhone successfully unlocked and I ended up in the home screen. It's worth to point out that both of the times this has happened there was no clear pattern which "helped" unlock the device (and avoid the white screen), just persistency and luck I guess.

As of yesterday (3rd time this happened), my iPhone suddenly showed the black loading screen, abruptly turned off, and now nothing seems to be working; I'm stuck at the white screen.

Is it safe to "swipe up to recover" without losing my data?

AFAIK, recovery mode does delete everything as does restore and upgrade. I would like to resort this without losing my data.

Perhaps an Apple expert could shed some light on this abnormal issue. Thanks!

Hi paulesposito,

We'd like to help share some information and guidance regarding this issue. We can only give guidance based on the current state of the device. The device being in what sounds like a frozen state, you would have to follow steps in If your iPhone won't turn on or is frozen - Apple Support which will take you to recovery mode, and if being unable to update to resolve the issue, if restoring is, then this would be a loss of current data that is not in a backup. We hope this clarification helps with the current state of the device.
