Camera is black when trying to take a picture in iMessage

If you go directly to the camera app, does the camera work then? If it does and the problem is only in Messages, restart your iPhone and test again.

If the issue is with multiple apps including the camera app, try swapping to the front facing camera. Or rear facing if you're already trying to use the front facing one. Are both cameras not showing anything in the app?
