Apple does not want anyone to manually manipulate the TM files or process. As TM drive reaches capacity it will delete files as required automatically. If you really need more room then start another drive or erase the present drive and start a new backup.

It changed around Big Sur when they changed to APFS backup scheme. There isn't a way to delete individual items.
And it looks like TM on Ventura will force a disk to APFS, regardless of how it was originally formatted. So there is no longer a way to delete individual backups or backups of a specific item. It also looks like Ventura wont let me see ~/.Trash in Finder or in the exclude option in Time Machine. Does that mean that I can't stop TM from wasting space backing up my Trash?
New backups will be APFS once at least Monterey, perhaps it was Big Sur. It certainly predates Ventura.
You could just empty the Trash if you don’t care about it. How much stuff do you keep in your trash that it would be an issue?
