And now, the phone must be reset / erased. Hopefully, you have a current backup to use to restore the phone.

Might be a good idea to write down the new passcode and keep it in a safe place. That will save a lot of time and aggravation the next time that someone cannot remember a passcode that they were sure they would never forget.
