Books in Ventura

Since I updated to Ventura on launching the Books app (14" M1 Pro MBP) any previously imported epub or pdf file gives me an error that says "Whatever the title is can't be found". The files show up in Books but just will not open. Books that were purchased open just fine.

Any idea how to fix this?

Hi neil laubenthal,

Are these files stored locally on the Macs internal drive? After confirming the files are still in Finder, try importing them into Books again by selecting File > Import while in the Books app.

See more info here: Import books, audiobooks, or PDFs in Books on Mac - Apple Support (ME)

"Import books, audiobooks, or PDFs in Books on Mac

You can import content that you didn’t get from the Book Store or Audiobook Store, such as PDFs, mp3 audiobooks, Audible audiobooks, and many EPUB books.

Note: Some files (such as ACSM, AZW, and ODM) can only be opened in their associated third-party apps. If you’re not sure which app you need to open your book or audiobook, check with the library or eBook store that provided the content.

  1. In the Books app  on your Mac, choose File > Import.
  2. In the Open dialog, select the books, audiobooks, or PDFs you want to import, then click Import.
  3. Note: You can also drag and drop books, PDFs, and some audiobooks into your library."

Let us know there results from there.

Cheers!

I assume that the files once imported into Books are in some sort of library location…or are they only located in their original location? If the former…if I can figure out where they are then reimport is easy. If they're only located in whatever their original location was (which seems strange…one would think that like Music they would be imported into a library folder someplace) then I'll have to dig through my archives to find all the original files and then reimport them. Obviously reimporting them from the library folder would be easier if I knew where it was. I did a quick search on one of the original pdf names…and did not find a library folder…so either they need to be in the original location or they get renamed somehow when imported into Books. I will pull them from archives if I need to…and already figured out that at worst I could do that…but was hoping for an easier answer.

Almost all of the files that are 'lost' are either epub, mobi, or pdf files that I bought or scanned from hard copy or downloaded like manuals and such.

I did browse through ~/Library to see if I could find a library folder…long time Mac guru so I figured I would find them there somewhere but no luck…and before I did it the hard way (look in archived files) I figured I would ask to make sure I wasn't missing anything.

Thanks.
