Apple Notes Window size on Mac (width)

How do I make the width of the Apple notes window smaller?

While working I like to have a internet browser and the notes app open so that I can take notes. I like to have the browser and the notes app taking up the full screen vertically and horizontally about 7/8 filled with the browser and 1/8 taken up by notes.

I'm not sure if it's due to the recent software update or if I accidentally messed with the settings, but now I can't get the width of the notes app to take up any less than 1/4 of the screen at the smallest width.

Also if I'm looking at the notes gallery view it has 2 columns of tiles instead of 1 like it had previously.

Any ideas on how to fix this? (currently having to have half the notes app off the screen which is driving me insane)
