Empty trash stuck...

Hi there. I upgraded to Ventura recently, then downgraded back to Monterey because I have some 3rd party plug-ins that were not allowing me to run Logic Pro X or Garageband. Anyway, since downgrading, I'm having issues with emptying the trash. When I select the command to empty trash the window with the blue status bar comes up saying, "emptying the trash," and it just stays on until I click the "X" box. The trash apparently empties after clicking the "X," but why won't it empty by itself without me doing this? I've even tried by just putting a very small file (screenshot) into the trash, and get the same results.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 12.6

Actually it turns out it was a OneDrive process running in the background that was causing the issue...not sure how to explain it, but a popup window would also show up while the trash was being emptied saying that Finder was trying to download a file from OneDrive, bla, bla, bla. When I chose to cancel that operation, the trash would then continue and empty as normal.

Hello muzikT70,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

Let's test in safe mode to see if you can replicate the issue:

"Start up your Intel-based Mac in safe mode

  1. Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key until you see the login window.
  2. Log in to your Mac.
  3. You might be asked to log in again.
  4. On either the first or second login window, you should see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar."

More details can be found here: Start up your Mac in safe mode

This will help us further isolate the issue and determine what could be the root cause. Also, are you able to test in another user account?

Cheers!

Hey muzikT70,

Thanks for giving that a try. Did you also start your Mac in safe mode? If so, does the issue still appear there? If it does appear in safe mode, you'll want to test your login items. This article will show you how: Remove login items to resolve startup problems on your Mac

1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, click General in the sidebar, then click Login Items on the right. (You may need to scroll down.)
2. Make a list of the login items in the Open at Login list—you’ll need to remember them later.
3. Select all of the login items, then click the Remove button.
4. Choose Apple menu  > Restart.
5. If this solves the problem, open Login Items settings again, add the login items one at a time, and restart your Mac after adding each one.
When the problem occurs again, follow the steps above to remove only the last login item you added.

Keep us posted on the results.

Thanks.
