Cannot rebuild Apple Mailbox...

Have been having some issues with slowness of receiving content for my Gmail e-mails into my fully synched Apple Mail on my MacBook Air. At times, the only way I can see full content vs. headers is if I totally restart my MacBook. Note while I did upgrade to Ventura, this had been happening for the previous releases as well...i.e. Monterey, Big Sur, etc.

I saw "solutions" of rebuilding Mailbox. Yet, every time I do this, NOTHING happens (have done this in the past, and it worked as expected, "deleted" all my Gmail e-mails, and then slowly but surely restored them.

Any ideas as to why the rebuild is not happening?

I don't have an answer for you. But I can tell you that you should not have put the word "deleted" in quotes. The word that needs to be in quotes is "rebuild". It most definitely deletes your e-mail.

It is probably one of thing single most dangerous commands on your computer. It reminds me of a running joke in old movies and TV shows about "the future". There was always some huge data store of all accumulated human and/or extraterrestrial knowledge managed by a computer. Then some human, trying to save Earth (why?) gets frustrated by the computer giving him (it's always a dude) useless information and says, "oh, just forget it". The computer then deletes the information as instructed. This was the vision of the future that we made real.

Use a web browser and confirm that your e-mail still exists on the Google servers.

Sorry for being a bit off in my use of words...I indeed carefully reviewed all, and when I put the word "deleted" in quotes, I simply meant the last time I was able to REBUILD, I could see that all my mail folders for the specific mailbox I was rebuilding ended up being emptied out...in fact, for a very short period, likely the folders themselves disappeared. My Gmail as before remains intact. But I DO hear you on certain actions ending up in disastrous consequences! And, again, my issue here is it it is not like what I see is long term, or catastrophic...just that when I access e-mail on any other Apple platform...phone or iPad, I can immediately see the entire e-mail, NOT just a header. And, again, I can usually get these by totally exiting e-mail and then reopening, or worst case, do a full restart

No need to apologize. My annoyance is directed at Apple for using the word "rebuild" when they mean "delete". I think that's just atrocious. If they want to offer an option to actually "rebuild" the index, then they should provide that.

Just make sure your e-mails are secure on the server.

If Mail is still confused, then delete your account from Mail. Then, re-add it. Then, wait. Wait some more. Keep waiting. I don't know how much e-mail you have, what kind of internet connection you have, or what kind of computer you have. But this can easily take days to complete. There is no progress display of any kind. You simply have to wait.

I recommend a little app called "Jiggler". It will "jiggle" your mouse and keep your computer from sleeping. If your computer goes to sleep, all of this stops until it wakes up again. So you have to keep your computer plugged in, "jiggled", and downloading e-mails until it completes.

The "index" in Mail is simply part of the larger, whole-disk "Spotlight" indexing system. When it works, it works great. When it doesn't work, it is absolutely infuriating. It will need to reindex the entire computer on a regular basis, without any warning or explanation. If all of this is happening while you are trying to install a new operating system like Ventura, that only adds to the time you need to wait. After a major operation like Ventura, the system needs to sit for a while (ideally kept awake and "jiggling") while it rebuilds the entire Spotlight index. And then if you have also tried to "rebuild" your Mail, you now have to download potentially several gigabytes new e-mail data and reindex all of that. Wait. Wait. Wait and then wait some more.

I hear you...and yes, am familiar with the wait. I have a pretty high speed connection, so the re-downloading of stuff off of Google's server goes quite fast. Also hear you on the delete account, then set up again. Am likely gonna wait a bit more for maybe someone from Apple to hop in here...might be an even longer wait, though ;-)
