is the Apple TV app no longer free when you buy a new Apple TV?
I bought a new Apple TV 4K after my old one died. Prior to this I got the Apple TV app free for a year upon purchase. Is this no longer the case?

The Apple TV app is built in to the Apple TV. Its free by virtue of just being there.
What you got was free access to the TV+ subscription service for 1 year. You can only get this free option once. After that, you need to pat for the subscription and you aren’t then eligible for more free years. also, aple reduced that free year to only 3 months a while ago anyway.
